Engaging Peer Consultants in the Mental Health Care in the Context of Psychiatric Care Reform in the Czech Republic

The thesis deals with the issue of the current involvement of peer consultants in the care of mentally ill people in the context of identifying their specific needs. The aim of the thesis is to identify the benefits of employing peer consultants for themselves and for the social and health care system of mental health care. At the same time, the thesis aims to identify possible barriers or challenges that arise in the practice of peer consultant work, as well as in their employment. The author uses the concept of recovery and implementation theory to theoretically and conceptually anchor the thesis. Through the perspective of experts working in the field and peer consultants, the thesis provides a mapping of the benefits of the peer consultant role and an overview of their specific needs. At the same time, the author identifies the existence of significant barriers in the current set-up of the system of peer consultant involvement, which are mainly caused by the legislative non-anchoring of their position. The author concludes with recommendations for the future development of peer consultant involvement.
Peer consultants as part of the community teams in the organization FOKUS Vysočina

The thesis deals with the representation of peer consultants in the community team, spe-cifically in community teams of the organization FOKUS Vysočina. The thesis is divi-ded into three chapters. The first chapter explains terms like: mental health or social work. The chapter also deals with the specifics of social work with people with mental illnesses. The second chapter is an introduction to the organization FOKUS Vysočina and specifically the work of the community teams. The chapter intorduces the target group, working representation, job description and methods of work in this organization. The third chapter explains the concept of peer support. It also focuses on the work of peer consultants in FOKUS Vysočina. The end of this chapter is partially composed of individual stories of peer consultants who work in FOKUS Vysočina. The stories inclu-de a personal view of the peer consultant's topic and its potential influence on the re-covery of clients. The thesis shows that the peer consultant is necessary and very significant for community teams. The statements of the peer consultants do not contradict the results of the studies and the knowledge from literature. It is evident that peer consultants in FOKUS Vysočina can have a very positive effect on the recovery of clients.
Benefits and difficulties associated with the profession of peer workers in mental health field

The ongoing process of mental health reform in the Czech Republic brings transformation of services provided for people with mental illness. Considering the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the involvement of care users in decision-making in both policy and service delivery is also becoming the point of interest. One form of participation of users with their own experience of mental illness in ongoing changes is to employ them as peer workers. The thesis deals with the view of peer workers employed in mental health field on the profits and difficulties associated with their profession and how peers perceive the impact of their employment on their path of recovery. The theoretical part describes the concept of recovery, explains the development and basic principles of peer support and peer jobs in the Czech Republic. Subsequently, the development of services for people with mental illness is described from institutional care to community services. Social support of nurses

The theoretical part describes the concept of social support and possible sources of social support. Further, it highlights the positive and negative aspects of social support human life. The second chapter deals with the professional social support that general nurses in the exercise of his profession. The concept of professional social support related to external conditions that have nurses available, ie., they are given in the work environment. In the empirical part, a combination of qualitative and quantitative surveys. Research on social support, and how to support nurses perceive, evaluate and use is made by semi- structured interviews, these are complemented by a questionnaire surfy. Inclusion of peer worker into mental health service team

The objective of the thesis is description of a new position of a peer consultant in the area of the mental health care from the view of a working team into which he enters. Furthermore, the thesis wants to submit a report about the form of this role abroad and about specific factors during his implementation into the team. The collection of data of qualitative research was realized among 12 social workers and 4 peers in three working teams three times within one year. The research methods that were used: interview according to guideline, nonparticipant structured observation of team meetings and time axis. Data from interviews were processed by inductive method inspired by grounded theory (open, axial and selective coding). The research question was focused on the process, positives and difficulties during integration of the peer worker into the working team. Research proved that the main obstacles in the successful integration of a peer were insufficient and quick preparation of a team on the peer position; absence of the social workers during the recruitment; bad technical equipment; lack of clients suitable for peer and personal discrepancy between a peer and the rest of a working team.
